Much has been said on the challenges within hospitality. The loss of chefs and FOH staff. Experienced staff have been lost and it may take time to fill the skills gap.

Developing skill comes with experience and that can take years in a nuanced sector such as hospitality. Those who climb the ranks and invest in their development need to be valued as do those who enter the industry. It’s how we nurture our people that matters. Maybe it requires more than trading people how to cook.

What is clear is that we need to look to the future and engage with young people.

It’s no secret that young people have lost out on a lot through the pandemic. We feel that hospitality can give a lot back to many young people.

A professional kitchen is an environment rich in educational opportunities. There is not one area of the school curriculum where we don’t venture on a daily basis.

Every F E A S T A T H O M E menu takes us on an adventure through science, geography, history, creativity, english and maths. It’s an enriched process of discovery that every creative and intelligent mind can develop.
For us here at Spode, in our kitchen studio there is nothing greater than taking others on this journey with us.

This year has got off to a great start with us getting groups of young people in the studio to cook with us. But it’s much much more than simply cooking. There’s something magic about the focus of a task like cooking that gives great opportunity to explore peoples growth mindset. The F E A S T E D kitchen is a place of discovery of flavour, skill and self. Cooking is a vehicle for so much more. The opportunity is great… it’s a time of change, hospitality is looking for answers. The way we grow, develop and cook are all in question when we consider factors such as planet and ecology, health and community. It’s a sublime time to innovate and define what the future could be.
